Why Turks and Caicos is One Of The Best ISLANDS FOR FEMALE SOLO TRAVELERS
It’s been itching inside you.
The desire to go on a solo vacation. You’ve seen influencers promote it and friends talk about how transformational it is. You want to taste it yourself. The only problem is, you have no idea where to start.
While there are plenty of destinations in Europe that are safe for female solo travelers (my personal favorites are Lisbon, Porto, and Croatia), maybe a trip across the world is out of your budget right now (or simply feels a little too far, if you’re new to the travel scene). I recently went on a solo trip to Turks and Caicos for five days, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. If you want to go on a tropical escape, I say skip the other popular destinations for now and visit the tiny land of sunshine that is Turks and Caicos.
Why Turks & Caicos is a safe spot for female travelers
I was a little nervous to come here at first. I haven’t had much experience traveling the Caribbean on my own before. As a mater of fact, I’ve never traveled anywhere south of the United States alone, so this was a first for me as well. What settled my nerves a little bit was knowing how small Providenciales, the main Island and the biggest tourist spot, was. My airbnb was smack in the center of the island, and it only took about 15 minutes to reach the far most west and east sides by car. Feeling like I was never too far from “home” felt very familiar and comforting.
Turks and Caicos also has one of the lowest crime rates in the Caribbean. Even compared to other popular destinations, like Mexico, Turks and Caicos is far more safe for tourists. Not once did I worry about my safety or fear for my belongings, allowing me to fully relax into the scene.
Getting around Turks & Caicos
You are going to need a car to get around, as there is no real public transportation on the island, and Taxi’s are far too expensive. This might be the only drawback if you can’t drive. Otherwise, book yourself a car rental service and feel the adrenaline rush as you drive on the left lane (possibly for the first time, like myself). I definitely felt a sense of pride in myself as I picked up the car on my own and whizzed (safely) through the streets in my frilly little dress. You’ll be pleased to know that the streets are actually really easy to drive on. There aren’t that many roads to get to know, so you get a hang of driving around pretty quickly. None of the locations are particularly hard to get to, and there’s always free parking provided at every destination. Not once did I fret about finding a place to park my car, which was a huge relief on my part.
Something for your soul
Not needing to worry about the nitty gritty details that typically stress a solo traveler out allows you to be fully present for the island and experience. I indulged in the hot sun and insanely turquoise water, and I got to do it all in my pre-selected cute outfits. When I was tired of the beach, I took a quick trip to town and enjoyed the shops, the delicious coffee, and treated myself to a cocktail at the Ritz Carlton. All of this is to say: Turks and Caicos is a breeze. It’s safe, inviting, and relaxing, and the perfect destination for female solo travelers.
